Society of Corporate Secretaries & Governance Professionals Announces New Chairman and Board of Directors for 2016-2017

Society Changes Its Name to Society for Corporate Governance

/EINPresswire.com/ -- NEW YORK, NY -- (Marketwired) -- 06/27/16 -- The Society of Corporate Secretaries & Governance Professionals (the "Society"), an organization of 3,300 corporate secretaries and governance professionals, today announced the election of Shelley J. Dropkin as Chairman of the Society's Board of Directors for the 2016-2017 year.

Dropkin is Deputy Corporate Secretary & General Counsel, Corporate Governance at Citigroup Inc. She was a member of the Board of Directors from 2008 to 2012 and has served in various Society leadership capacities, including as chair of the Nominating and Governance Committee, chair of the 2014 National Conference Committee, and president of the New York Chapter. Dropkin took office last week at the Society's 70th National Conference in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

Virginia K. Fogg, General Counsel at Norfolk Southern Corporation in Norfolk, Virginia, was elected Chairman-Elect of the Society's Board for 2016-2017. Fogg was a member of the Board of Directors from 2011 to 2015 and served as chair of the Policy Advisory Committee and president of the Middle Atlantic Chapter. She was the chair of this year's National Conference Committee.

The following Society members were elected to the Board of Directors:

  • Brian Breheny, Partner, Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP
  • Paul DeNicola, Managing Director, Governance Insights Center, PwC
  • Stacy Ingram, Associate General Counsel and Deputy Corporate Secretary, The Home Depot, Inc.
  • Curt Kramer, Associate General Counsel & Secretary, Navistar, Inc.
  • Marla Zwas, Deputy General Counsel, Flagstar Bancorp Inc.

This year's conference, titled Reaching New Heights: Looking Back, Moving Forward, welcomed more than 750 attendees who had the opportunity to attend their choice of over 30 breakout sessions that focused on a variety of topics designed for governance professionals at public companies of all sizes, as well as private and nonprofit entities.

Name Change

The Society also announced that it has changed its name to the Society for Corporate Governance, effective immediately. The new name is shorter, easier to say and remember, and more inclusive of all corporate governance practitioners.

While the name has changed, the Society will maintain its focus on governance from the issuer perspective without diminishing its focus on corporate secretaries' professional development.

In addition to adopting a new name, the Society has updated its mission statement to "Shaping corporate governance through education, collaboration and advocacy." And, the Society has added a vision statement reflective of what it hopes to achieve: "Creating long-term shareholder value through better governance."

"Our new name, mission, and vision capture the essential character of the Society in terms of what we do and what we strive for as we grow our membership," said Darla Stuckey, President & CEO of the Society. "The goal with the new branding is to create a lasting impression with potential members and to reinforce the value to our current members."
