What! Sweden is preparing nuclear bunkers for its citizens? Is World War 3 certain?

The doom is here.
World War III possibly is nearer than you might have thought.
Why do we say so?
Because, as per a Daily Mail report, Sweden has announced a 100 million krona ($9.9 million) investment to renovate its civil defense bunkers after warning its citizens they should prepare for the risk of war amid Russia's ongoing conflict with Ukraine.

What’s happening?

As Russia's ongoing conflict with Ukraine continues to escalate, Sweden has announced a £ 7.7 million (100 million krona) plan to modernise its civil defence bunkers after warning Swedes to prepare for the risk of war. The Scandinavian country, which shares a border with Russia, has 64,000 such bunkers. With 64,000 bunkers spread across the country, Sweden already has more shelters than almost every other nation, with space for around seven million people - almost three-quarters of Sweden's 10.5 million population.

The bunkers are reportedly designed to provide protection against shockwaves and bomb fragments, the blast and heatwaves from a nuclear weapon, radioactive fallout, gas from chemical weapons, and biological weapons.

Why the contingency plan?

Since Sweden joined NATO in March 2024, its Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) has stepped up inspections of the shelters, some of which are large enough to accommodate thousands of people at a time. MSB said on April 1 that it had begun a huge project to modernise the nuclear shelters - a task it expected to take 'two to three years' - which includes efforts to upgrade filters which help protect occupants from chemical and radiological weapons, and that the work is already underway on 25 of the 80 largest shelters.
Sweden's action comes amid rising tensions over the war in Ukraine and doubts over US President Donald Trump's commitment to defending Europe.

Focusing on defence:

In January, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said his country "is not at war, but there is no peace either" in the run up to Sweden marking a year since it joined the NATO military alliance. Mr Kristersson has vowed to increase defence spending to 2.4% this year, rising to 2.6% in three years as Sweden seeks to strengthen its armed forces after slashing military spending after the Cold War ended.
Authorities in Sweden reactivated the country's "total defence" strategy in 2015 after Russia's illegal annexation of Crimea. It combines both civil and military defence action.

World War III coming up?

Britain's Ministry of Defence (MoD) announced on April 1 that RAF fighter jets will patrol Poland's airspace as part of NATO's eastern flank operations. British-built Typhoon jets arrived in eastern Poland from RAF Lossiemouth on Tuesday to participate in an "enhanced air policing mission" under NATO. The MoD reported that six UK Typhoon fighter jets from the II (AC) Squadron will be deployed alongside Swedish Air Force Gripen jets.
Defense Minister Lord Coaker met with Polish counterpart Wladysław Marcin Kosiniak-Kamysz and Swedish Defense Minister Pal Jonson on Tuesday to emphasize the UK's commitment to European security and to mark the start of the operation.

This marks the first time Swedish fighter jets have participated in air policing on the territory of another NATO ally since Sweden joined the alliance last year.
In April 2024, six Typhoon fighter jets, along with more than 200 personnel, were stationed in Romania to help defend NATO's eastern border. Subsequently, in August 2024, four F-35B jets were deployed to Iceland to safeguard NATO airspace in the northern region.
These recent deployments, along with the latest announcement, suggest that Europe is preparing for a significant conflict in the coming years. Additionally, Finland has announced its intention to follow the Baltic States and Poland in withdrawing from a treaty that prohibits the use of anti-personnel mines.
