Tom Armstrong Assumes the Newly Created Position

New York -- October 19, 2017 - The New York Times Company today announced the appointment of Tom Armstrongto vice president, advertising, Asia Pacific. The Times is also opening a new Singapore sales office, where Mr. Armstrong will be based. Both announcements build upon The Times's recent expansion of its advertising and marketing solutions business in Asia, including the June opening of itsTokyo sales office, the expansion ofT Brand Studio to Hong Kongin May and the hiring of two programmatic advertising directors in London and Singapore in August.

Armstrong was most recently chief revenue officer at Fairfax Media's Metro Publishing division, and before that, served as the company's commercial and marketing services director. He also spent three years as vice president, digital sales international at Viacom International Media Networks, based in the U.K.

Lisa Ryan Howard, senior vice president, advertising, The New York Times Company, said, 'The New York Times helps people understand the world--the whole world. Our journalists are on the ground in more than 150 countries and, now, building on last year's announcement around the expansion of our global business, we are increasing staff in Asia to support the rapid growth in digital audience and advertising in the region.'

Alexandra Benardwill oversee the office from Singapore as advertising sales director. Benard joins The Times from Politico Europe Brussels where she managed advertising, events and content partnerships for global brands. She will be supported by a sales coordinator.

The Singapore team will serve marketers and agencies across Southeast Asia, including Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia, and will work closely withT Brand Studio Hong Kong, The Times's global content marketing agency. T Brand is headquartered in New York, and has international sales offices located in London and Paris, in addition to Hong Kong.

Alexandra will lead the Singapore office with a deep understanding of travel and place branding advertising that will prove to be extremely useful in this part of the world.'

The sales developments come on the heels of some recent additions to The Times's already robust business reporting staff in the region. The Times recently hired technology reporter Ray Zhongin Beijing. It also transferred Vindu Goel, its Apple reporter, to India, and reporter Alex Stevensonfrom New York to Hong Kong where she covers Chinese business.

As part of the growth efforts in Asia, Times chief operating officer Meredith Kopit Levien, and deputy managing editor, Rebecca Blumenstein, along with Howard, will travel this week to the region, to host a variety of events, dinners and meetings with new and existing brand partners there. The focus of the trip is to introduce Blumenstein who will share The Times's vision to expand its global business and tech coverage in Asia. They will make stops in Tokyo, Seoul, Beijing, Shenzen, Hong Kong, Singapore and Delhi.

Earlier this year, The Times also launched two Chinese language magazines, including 'The New York Times Travel Magazine 新视线' in August, and a lifestyle magazine '' in May. The Times will also host its second-annualLuxury Travelconference in Singapore, March 22-23, 2018.

The Times previously employedPI Global, an international advertising agency, as its local sales representative in Singapore.
