Edo prison officials accused of torturing PUWOG worker

Alexander Okere, Benin

Personnel of the Nigeria Prisons Service have allegedly tortured an official of the Edo State Public Works Guard over the arrest of a prison warder for an alleged traffic offence.

The incident was said to have occurred on Airport road in the Oredo Local Government Area of the state. The warder was said to have been accosted by the PUWOG workers when he was allegedly caught picking up passengers with a blue Audi car around a prohibited part of the road.

It was learnt that the government workers entered the car and instructed the prison officer to follow them to their office at Urokpota hall to answer for the offence. Southern City News, however, gathered that the warder drove his vehicle to a prison facility on Sapele road and drew the attention of his colleagues, who attacked the PUWOG workers.

One of them, identified as Stanley, was said to have been ordered to immerse himself in a pool of mud.

When contacted, the Public Relations Officer of the State Prison Command, Mr. Aminu Suleman, confirmed the incident on Friday.
