Policies for Europe presented by student to the European CommissionerExecutive members of the European Democrat Students (EDS) and its Maltese member organisation Studenti Demokristjani Maltin (SDM) have had a meeting in Valletta with the European Commissioner for Education, Culture, Youth and Sport Tibor Navracsics.

They expressed satisfaction that Valletta is hosting the European Capital of Culture 2018. Describing it as an opportunity for youths to get engaged in cultural events all across the islands.

EDS presented its Manifesto on the upcoming European Parliament Elections which was prepared by its Ad Hoc Working Group on European Elections 2019. Next February the EP is set to present a report on its composition following Brexit.

The organisations also discussed challenges related to the Erasmus+ programme. They stressed the need “to continue advertising the programme among youth and remote areas such as Gozo in order to make it available for them.”

The Commissioner said that he is seeking to increase the Erasmus+ budget to make sure it is a more inclusive and accessible programme.

Also discussed with the Commissioner was the ongoing reforms on the European Solidarity Corps supporting youth volunteering and the students emphasised the need that such programme obtains separate funding independent of Erasmus+.

SDM students gave an overview of their efforts to engage students in five different educational institutes in Gozo and Malta.

They also gave details of their last nationwide campaign on student activism and presented their next campaigns for the University of Malta and the other institutions.

The student delegation was led by EDS Chairman Virgilio Falco, EDS Vice Chairman Beppe Galea and SDM President Neil Smart Costantino.

European Democrat Students (EDS) is a pan-European centre-right student and youth political association. It represents over 1,600,000 students and young people in 40 member organisations from 35 countries in Europe and is the largest political student association in Europe.
